Seminar Wednesday 25th November 2pm - 7.15pm    a    GA  Architects  organisation

Designing Environments for Children and adults with Autism.

Venue: The Building Centre, Store Street, London WC1E

With the Autism Bill reaching debate in the UK House of Lords for the first time, awareness of the condition has reached an unprecedented level. This is reflected in the number of journals and articles highlighting topical and at times ground breaking news in the treatment and care of children and adults with autism. However, from speaking to care providers, teachers and carers around the country there still appears to be much that can be done to raise the awareness of the environmental conditions in which children and adults live their daily lives whether it be the home, the classroom or the workplace. Yet it is vitally important. Many young people with disabilities live in care and just about every Local Authority or County Council (in the UK but it must be similar in most other countries) has a duty to care and educate the increasing numbers needing care beyond the home. This seminar follows the last highly successful seminar held in April 2009 and discusses different elements that should be considered in design and the importance of a properly designed environment that addresses the needs of all its users including carers and teachers.
